Veteran Benefits for Seniors in Oregon

If you or a family member served in the U.S. Armed Forces, several federal and Oregon-specific benefits can significantly ease the cost of downsizing, moving, or transitioning into senior housing.

VA Aid & Attendance

A monthly pension add-on for wartime-era veterans (or surviving spouses) who need help with daily activities. Apply online at va.gov, by mail (VA Form 21-2680), or at your nearest VA regional office.

Oregon Veteran Home Loan Program

A state loan program (separate from the federal VA home loan) funding low-interest, fixed-rate mortgages for Oregon veterans since 1945. Purchase-only, for owner-occupied single-family homes, usable up to four times in a lifetime. Contact ODVA at (800) 633-6826.

Oregon Veteran Property Tax Exemption & Deferral

Veterans certified as 40% or more disabled, active-duty/National Guard/Reserve members, and qualifying surviving spouses can exempt a portion of their home’s assessed value from property tax. Apply through your county assessor’s office.

Oregon Veterans’ Homes

State-run skilled nursing facilities in The Dalles and Lebanon serve honorably discharged veterans, spouses/surviving spouses, and Gold Star Parents. Veterans with a service-connected disability of 70%+ may have full cost of care covered by the VA.
